How to Use Essential Oils Safely - Part 3
Caution is the catchword with essential oils.
Unfortunately, a majority of products available today are adulterated with solvent extenders, poor growing methods, improper production and are synthetic copies. Inferior quality, or adulterated essential oils, are unlikely to produce therapeutic results and could even be toxic to the user because of the chemicals used. Use caution when selecting essential oils.
Books and articles continue to perpetuate misinformation about essential oils. Try to choose the books and articles that were written by professionals in the field.
Europe established standards to outline the chemical profile and principal constituents that a quality essential oil should have. AFNOR (Association French Normalization Organization Regulation) and ISO (International Standards Organization), publish guidelines to help buyers differentiate between therapeutic-grade essential oils and a lower-grade oil with a similar chemical make-up and fragrance.
There are reports of allergic reactions from low-quality or adulterated essential oils. Therefore, it is vital to know and trust your essential oils vendor. I have personally experimented with low-cost oils. It became clear to me, the hard way, that there is no substitute for therapeutic-grade oils.
Young Living Essential Oils is the only company that I recommend because of the purity of their products. I studied with Gary Young personally, who is the founder. I trust his knowledge and expertise. His dedication to bring the purest oils to his family and customers is reassuring, and invaluable in this uncertain market of predatory products.
How-To's of Essential Oils
- ATTENTION: Keep all essential oils out the reach of children, and only apply oil to them under skilled supervision. If a child swallows an essential oil, administer a mixture of milk, cream, yogurt, or another safe oil-soluble liquid. If necessary, contact a poison control center or seek emergency medical attention.
- As a rule, essential oils bring balance to the body. The safest way to use essential oils is to apply to the bottom of the feet, although they are safe to use anywhere on the body—except in the eyes or ear canal. (Note: I have accidentally gotten oregano oil in my eye without any side effects.) Oregano oil is known to irritate the skin if applied neat, which means applied full strength, undiluted. Pure vegetable oil dilutes essential oils. I highly suggest that you keep a bottle of vegetable oil in your house in case of discomfort or skin irritation.
- Always keep the bottles tightly capped and store in amber or dark blue glass, away from light. If stored properly, essential oils will last for years.
- Do not use oils high in menthol (such as peppermint) on the neck of a child under the age of 30 months. However, it is safe for the feet and great for fevers.
- Do not handle contact lenses with even a minute amount of oil on your hands. Oils high in phenol can damage contact lens.
- Pregnant women should consult with their healthcare professional before starting any type of health plan with essential oils.
- Before you take GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) essential oils internally, test your reactions. Dilute one drop of essential oil into one teaspoon of an oil-soluble liquid (agave, olive oil, soy or rice milk).
- People with allergies should test a drop of oil on the inside of the arm for 30 minutes before any application to other areas of the body.
- If you add undiluted oils directly to bath water, that can cause serious discomfort to sensitive areas of your body as the oil floats undiluted to the top of the water. Do not add undiluted essential oils directly to bath water. Instead, use epsom salts or a bath gel base for all oils. This is an excellent way to disperse the oils.
- Occasionally, the first time you use therapeutic essential oils, you can have an allergic reaction or a rash. This is not from the essential oils, but rather from the other ingredients that I delineated in the opening paragraph of this page, which includes petro- and hydrocarbon-based chemicals, aluminum salts, and even DDT—all of which cause stress to the body's system. If you experience a negative reaction, avoid the essential oils and begin a detox program by using pure Frankincense essential oil to move the toxins out of your body more rapidly. You can use high-quality essential oils instead without the same negative response.
- Do not apply essential oils to skin that has been exposed to cosmetics, personal care products, soaps, or cleansers containing synthetic chemicals. Some of these chemicals can penetrate the skin and fatty tissues for days and even weeks after use. Keep in mind, elimination is a much better choice than holding the toxins in the body indefinitely!
Application of Essential Oils
Topical application: Apply 2 drops to the bottom of the feet. Wait a few minutes to allow the body to become acquainted with the oil. (Children under 2 years of age should only have oil that has been diluted in a carrier oil.) There are many ways to use essential oils. You can learn more from my Distributor Page at the Young Living Web site. Essential oils are used in massage, acupuncture, acupressure, warm packs, cold packs, and for many physical problems. They can be diffused, layered, ingested, and the list goes on. SOURCES:- Essential Oils Desk Reference, Compiled by Essential Science Publishing.
